E-Commerce Packaging & The Holidays
It’s that time of year again: gift-giving season. When more and more gifts are purchased online every year, it’s interesting to start thinking about all the packaging that must be used. We’ve all experienced that time when we got a box that was much too large for whatever was inside, or much too stuffed with non-sustainable or non-recyclable materials on the inside to keep things from moving around.
Do you sell items online? Especially if you sell items in a variety of sizes and shapes, packaging can be really challenging. We’re sure places like Amazon fulfillment centers have exactly this problem. With the variety of items that can be purchased there, how can they be expected to have the perfect box and materials every time?
Even if you don’t have the perfectly sized box, the least you can do is use great inside-the-box materials and packing methods that really help to eliminate some of the packaging problems that e-commerce companies have, while saving money at the same time.
In an article by Anne Marie Mohan, Senior Editor at Packaging World, AMERIPEN has released a new brochure in which they describe “The Four Rs” for consumers, “regarding what they can do to create a more economically and environmentally sustainable holiday season.” Although these are written for consumers, they’re also important points to remember if you’re the one doing the shipping! Here are the four Rs:
Reduce and consolidate orders, delivering more products in fewer packages.
Reuse packaging, especially boxes and cushioning materials.
Return packaging to local shipping stores, especially cushioning materials.
Recycle corrugated and other materials, including polyethylene films.
In another article, Mohan dives deeper into e-commerce packaging for the holidays, and reviews how package fit, package quality and package damage all come into the equation. It’s a long read, but a great one to at least skim. Find it here: E-commerce packaging pitfalls & opportunities
